Places of interest in Spain - Castile la Vieja

Places of interest in Spain have uniqueness and that is it is not just some beaches or some wildlife sanctuary; there are many places to visit like places of worship, museums, castles and places of natural beauty like beaches, parks, etc.

Amongst the cathedrals is the La Mezquita located in the famous Cordoba province of Spain which is one of the most visited cathedrals by those who visit this city. Historians are of the opinion that this was actually a place where a mosque existed. The beautiful arches in and around the cathedral and the sculpture and painting works add beauty to this most imposing building. Certainly Gerald Brenan, the renowned writer of the 20th Century was right in saying that this cathedral and the fortifications around it are the most beautiful buildings ‘in the whole of Spain’. Interestingly the building has an interesting combination of Gothic, Roman, Syrian Byzantine and Persian architecture. Perhaps no other building in the whole of Spain has so much of a combination of different architectures. This place was sanctified as a Cathedral in 1236.

Castle Montilla is another place of interest in Spain. This is also located in the famous province of Cordoba. This castle is located on the top of a mountain. The castle is believed to have been built in the 15th century. The castle has huge towers. This is a huge castle with a large terrace and it even houses a palace within it. The terrace is large enough to house about 400 horses. It only demonstrates the battle preparedness of those who built this castle. The ruins of this castle can be seen.

Another place of visit is the La Judería which is a shrine believed to have been built by the Jewish people in honor of intellectuals and scholars from Cordoba. To pay homage to such people, shrines were built and La Juderia is one such shrine which is believed to have been built during the days of Romans and Goths. The La Juderia is believed to have been built to pay homage to Roman Philosopher Seneca. Other philosophers who are remembered here are Averroes who was an Arabian Philosopher and Maimonides who was a Jewish Philosopher. This shrine is popular for its immaculate works of art and some of the artifacts are made of gold and silver. In fact some call it a challenge to the modern goldsmiths. It is certainly worth seeing this shrine.

Just imagine a place which is said to be a city which has Europe’s best climate. Certainly that place is nothing short of heaven. Torrox is one such place which is considered to be having the best climate in Europe. The mountains Sierra Tejeda and Sierra Almigara and the coastal area of Torrox are other most preferred areas for a holiday. These places are considered to be the most favorite tourist spots of Spain. They are known for their unparalleled natural beauty.

The Torrox Pueblo (the village) has many places of interest for the tourist to operate.

In the first place is the village; the narrow cobbled roads with beautifully whitewashed houses and a quiet environment are something to be felt rather than explained. The tourism has little or no effect on the life of the people and it has not made any change in the life of the people in the village. One will certainly fall in love with this tiny village because it is so beautiful.

Iglesia Church is one of the places of interest for tourists. This church is popular for its beautiful architecture. The other place of interest is the 19th century building called the Casa de Culture which now houses the mint and the customs house. Although entry to these buildings is restricted, one can have a view of these buildings from a particular distance.

On the other hand the costal area of Torrox (Torrox Costa) has many things to offer the tourists. The beautiful lighthouse and separate area for pedestrians which is dotted with many apartments and villas with bars and cafés running alongside make the tourist feel most comfortable. The beach is simply beautiful with avenues for a tourist to enjoy like water sports.

The stay on the mountain provides the tourist with great experience. Rare species of trees and plants are found here. The view of the sea and the village below from the top of the mountain is something stunningly beautiful. The mountains have sheltered some villages. These villages have some villas where the tourists can have a comfortable stay. Rarest rock formations and landscapes are the other features of the mountains in Torrox.

While all the places of visit in Spain have beautiful beaches, majestic mountains, churches and cathedral or castles centuries old; Lanzarote has something special in addition to majestic mountain and churches, etc. Some of these interesting features are in Lanzarote only. National Park:

The national park called ‘National Park of Timanfay’ should never be missed. This is actually a natural park which has volcanic fields. It has a mountain from where the city of Lanzarote can be viewed. Apart from this, the park has many rare species of plants not found anywhere in Spain. It is more or less a live laboratory for those who are interested in geological formations and study of volcanoes. Authorities say that many scientists do visit this place to pursue their research on Volcanoes. According to history, these volcanoes had erupted for about six years (1730 to 1736) and caused extensive damage to the region. You can hire a guide who will take you to the top of the hill and you can see the beautiful volcanoes. There is a restaurant where local specialties are served at most reasonable rates. Bullfighting in Spain

Spain brings to mind, among other things, the image of a bullfighter, hands raised over the bull and holding a short sword. The dusty arena, the cheering crowds shouting olé with each pass and finally, the quiet just before the bullfighter turns to face the crowd and salutes it.

The Beginning

What is now a part of Spanish culture began as a part of the sacrifice to the Iberian gods before the Christianization of Spain. The local heroes would play with the bull before dispatching it to show their courage and their worthiness to rule and soon the tradition of baiting the bull became a part of the culture of the people.

The Caballeros

At first only nobles were allowed to fight the bulls on horseback but an edict of King Philip V forbade the aristocrats from taking part in this show of bravery. This was probably due to the fact that bravery was not often evidenced in the performances of the pampered nobles. The common people then began to take an interest in the sport but adapted it to their own circumstances. Instead of facing the bulls mounted on horses, which were the property of the nobles or caballeros, men on horses, they fought them on foot.

Much more than Bravery

Facing a raging bull on foot needs much more than bravery. It also needs cool thinking to escape the horns at just the right moment and certain techniques were soon invented to allow the bullfighter to do just that. The veronica, a coordinated movement of cape and sword gives the fighter a way to distract the bull just enough to make him move the tip of his horns an inch or two from the fighter's body.

Famous Names

The names of brave bullfighters have gone down in history. Names such as Manolete, El Cordobes, Joselito and Francisco Romero are as well-known to fans of bull-fighting as are the names of famous soccer players today. Ernest Hemingway did much to popularize bull-fighting in the US.

Bullfighting Today

Today, the sport of bullfighting has become formalized with each team member assigned a task to perform. The duty of the bullfighter is still the same, however, and he still has to face the charging bull armed with his courage, his swift feet and his short sword. If he is successful and has given a laudable performance, he is rewarded with an ear of the bull. If his performance has been exceptional, he is given both ears and if he has performed extravagantly well, he is rewarded with both ears and the tail of the bull.
